Myrrh and frankincense are both dried tree resins tapped from shrubby trees in the family Burseraceae that grow in the arid parts of the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, but they come from different genera and smell distinctly different. What does myrrh smell like?

Myrrh’s smell is harder to pin to a single family of compounds, which is part of why it reads as more complex and less immediately “clean” than frankincense. The characteristic bitter, smoky, faintly medicinal note comes from furanosesquiterpenes including curzerene, furanoeudesma-1,3-diene and lindestrene, compounds not found in frankincense at meaningful levels. These give myrrh its dark, root-like, almost anise-adjacent facet, sometimes described as balsamic-medicinal rather than fresh. Chemistry: why they smell so different
