Charcoal vs Electric Incense Burners: Which Is Better for Resins?

Charcoal gives drama and smoke; electric heaters give control and a truer scent. A practical comparison of censers, self-igniting discs, mica plates, electric heaters and tealight warmers for burning resins.

The way you heat a resin changes how it smells. The same frankincense tear can be a bright, lemony cloud on charcoal or a slow, honeyed warmth on an electric heater; the same benzoin can be a sweet room-filler or a scorched, acrid mistake. Choosing the burner is the first decision.

Charcoal censers

What they are. A heatproof bowl or metal censer filled with sand, ash or salt, holding a lit charcoal disc. From Orthodox thuribles to brass Arabian mabkhara and simple ceramic bowls.

Strengths. Immediate, generous scent; a lot of smoke, which is part of the point in ceremony; no electricity; works anywhere; the traditional method for every incense culture.

Weaknesses. Heat is high and uncontrolled, so resins scorch; self-igniting discs add their own faint chemical smell; smoke and particulates; charcoal must be lit, managed and disposed of safely; wasteful, since much of the resin burns rather than volatilizes.

Doing it well. Wait until the disc is fully grey. Use a mica plate, a piece of foil or a layer of ash between coal and resin. Use natural bamboo charcoal if you can be bothered to light it. Small pieces, added one at a time.

Electric heaters

What they are. A small appliance with a ceramic or metal cup heated by an element, usually with a dial or several temperature settings. Sold for incense, aromatherapy and bakhoor.

Strengths. Adjustable heat means every resin can be warmed at the temperature that suits it: benzoin low, frankincense medium, copal a little higher. Little or no smoke; what you smell is the resin’s aroma, not its combustion. Far more efficient: a single tear lasts much longer. No fire, no charcoal, no fuss; suitable for daily use and small rooms.

Weaknesses. Needs a socket; no ceremony, no visible smoke; the scent is quieter and fills a large space more slowly; cheap models have poor temperature control; residue must be cleaned from the cup.

Doing it well. Start at the lowest setting and go up until the resin just melts and releases scent. Line the cup with foil for easy cleaning. Empty and wipe while warm.

Tealight warmers

An oil burner or wax-melt warmer used dry, or with a small dish. Cheap, quiet, less smoke than charcoal. But a tealight’s heat is fixed and often wrong: too hot for benzoin, too cool for hard resins. Best for frankincense, copal and blends; poor for balsams.

Japanese-style kōdō heating

The most refined version of the mica-plate idea: a bed of ash in a cup, a buried piece of charcoal, and a small mica plate on top on which a tiny sliver of wood or resin is warmed rather than burned. Almost no smoke, exquisite control, and a good deal of practice needed. Worth learning if you care about the scent more than the cloud.

Frequently asked questions

Is an electric incense heater worth it?

If you burn resins more than occasionally, yes. It gives a cleaner scent with far less smoke, wastes less resin, and needs no charcoal or ventilation drama. Charcoal remains better for ceremony and for filling a large space quickly.

What is a mica plate for?

A thin sheet of mica placed on the charcoal so the resin sits above the coal rather than on it. It moderates the heat, prevents scorching, and gives a slower, cleaner release. Japanese kōdō uses the same principle.

Can I use a wax-melt warmer for resin?

Yes, with a small metal or ceramic dish over the tealight. It is the cheapest low-smoke option, though the temperature is not adjustable and often runs too hot for benzoin.
