They are also chemically legible: a handful of compounds — benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, vanillin, α-pinene — recur across the whole resin family, so learning to recognize them in one material transfers directly to the next. What does a benzoin-based fixative smell like?
Siam benzoin smells of vanilla, cinnamon and a faint balsamic sharpness, driven by cinnamyl cinnamate and small amounts of vanillin. Sumatra benzoin is drier and more chocolate-like, with a higher proportion of benzoic acid and less overt sweetness. Labdanum: the backbone of amber accords
No resin starter kit is complete without labdanum, the exuded gum of Cistus ladanifer, grown mainly in Spain and Morocco. Its scent is leathery, ambery and faintly animalic, built on sclareol and related labdane diterpenes that also serve as the biosynthetic starting point for ambroxide, the synthetic amber material derived from sclareol. What else belongs in the kit?
Beyond the four core materials, two more earn a place for the contrast they add.
- Elemi, from Canarium luzonicum in the Philippines, smells of lemon and pine resin, driven by α-phellandrene and limonene. It functions as a resinous top note rather than a base, and is useful for keeping a resin-heavy formula from smelling flat or purely dark.
- Opoponax (sweet myrrh, from Commiphora guidottii or Opopanax chironium) is sweeter and less bitter than true myrrh, closer to a bridge between myrrh and labdanum.

Tinctures, absolutes or resinoids: which form to buy?
Raw resin lumps are the cheapest way to acquire material but the hardest to dose, since strength varies with age and purity.
