The contrast between the bright top and the dark, mossy base is the genre’s signature.
Benzoin is not part of that founding triad, but it appears often enough in the base of classic chypres to be worth examining on its own. What does benzoin do to oakmoss?
Oakmoss (Evernia prunastri) absolute is dominated by depsides and aromatic aldehydes that give it a bitter, slightly leathery, forest-floor quality with a sharp, almost inky top. On its own in a base accord, it can feel austere, even medicinal, especially at the concentrations used in classic chypres.
Benzoin’s sweetness works against that sharpness without erasing it. What does a benzoin-softened chypre smell like?
