Arabic lubān was a general term for aromatic resin, applied to frankincense and to other gum resins traded along the same routes. Jāwī is the adjectival form of Jawa, meaning “of Java.” Together the phrase meant “Javan frankincense,” a description of provenance rather than botany.

The garbling happened when European merchants, mostly Italian, borrowed the term secondhand through Arabic and Persian intermediaries rather than reading it. Listeners heard lu-banjawi and assumed the lu- was the article lo, much as Arabic al- was routinely stripped from loanwords like “algebra” or kept in others like “alcohol.” Drop the presumed article and banjawi remains, which Italian traders rendered as benjuì or benzuì.

Why “Java” for a resin from Sumatra and Laos?

The mismatch between name and origin is a shipping artifact, not a botanical one. Neither region is the island of Java. Once in Italian as benjuì, the word spread quickly along trade and apothecary networks. French absorbed it as benjoin, Portuguese and Spanish as benjuí, and German as Benzoe. English used “benjamin” through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries — the resin is still occasionally called “gum benjamin” in older pharmacopoeias and folk usage.

The Latinized spelling “benzoin” gained ground in scientific and pharmaceutical Latin as apothecaries standardized names for imported materia medica. A pivotal moment came early in the seventeenth century, when the French writer and amateur chemist Blaise de Vigenère is credited with isolating benzoic acid by dry sublimation of the resin, giving European chemistry its first pure crystalline compound named directly after benzoin. That naming choice, more than any single edict, locked “benzoin” into scientific vocabulary alongside its older trade-language forms.

What does benzoin have to do with benzene?

The connection is direct and well documented. Sublimed or distilled from the resin, benzoic acid became a standard laboratory reagent by the eighteenth century. In 1833 the German chemist Eilhard Mitscherlich distilled benzoic acid with lime and obtained a new liquid hydrocarbon, which he named “Benzin” precisely because it derived from benzoic acid, which in turn derived from benzoin. Justus von Liebig proposed “Benzol” shortly after; English usage eventually settled on “benzene,” partly to avoid confusion with unrelated commercial “benzine” solvents and with the -ol suffix reserved for alcohols.

From that single hydrocarbon, chemistry built an entire nomenclature: benzyl, benzoyl, and the benzo- prefix used across thousands of aromatic compounds, including several found in the resin itself, such as benzoic acid and its esters. Does the name still fit what is sold as benzoin today?

Only loosely, and that is worth stating plainly. “Benzoin” now covers resin from at least two different Styrax species harvested in different countries, unified commercially rather than botanically, a point of real confusion for buyers who assume a single tree stands behind the name.
