A practical guide to how benzoin resin is sorted into almonds, siftings, blocks and dust, what each grade looks and smells like, and which to buy. Almonds are whole or near-whole tears of hardened resin, tapped from the tree and dried without further processing beyond hand-sorting. Dust is the fine residue left after tears are sorted, cut or transported, made of small fragments and powder. Almonds are the cleanest, most stable form; dust oxidizes faster and often carries more bark and dirt from handling. Commercial benzoin blocks are usually pressed from lower-grade tears, siftings and dust, gently warmed so the resin fuses into a solid mass. Reputable suppliers use only benzoin in this process, but blocks are also where inexpensive diluents such as rosin or storax are most often introduced, since the added material is hidden once the block sets.

Why benzoin comes in grades at all

Benzoin is not harvested as a uniform product. Tappers cut the bark of Styrax benzoin in Sumatra or Styrax tonkinensis in Laos and Vietnam, and the resin that exudes hardens into tears of very different sizes, colors and cleanliness over months of collection. After harvest, dealers separate the resin by hand into commercial grades. There is no single international standard; grading conventions differ between Sumatra and Siam (Laos/Vietnam) supply chains, and terms like “almonds” or “siftings” describe physical form and cleanliness rather than a fixed chemical specification. Understanding the grades helps buyers match resin to purpose and price.

Almonds: the whole tears

“Almonds” refers to whole or nearly whole tears, roughly almond-sized, that have been picked out by hand from the general harvest. This is the highest and most expensive grade because it requires the most sorting labor and represents resin that solidified cleanly, without picking up excessive bark, sand or plant debris.

Sumatra almonds are typically reddish-brown to amber outside with a paler, sometimes marbled interior when broken. Siam almonds, from Styrax tonkinensis, tend to be paler, almost creamy or biscuit-colored, and more brittle. Siftings and broken tears

Siftings are the next grade down: broken pieces, smaller tears and fragments left after the almonds have been picked out, then passed through a sieve to remove the finest dust. This grade still consists of genuine solid resin, just in smaller and less uniform pieces, often mixed with a small amount of bark.

Siftings are a practical middle ground. They cost less than almonds, burn just as well on charcoal, and are perfectly adequate for tincture-making where the resin will be dissolved anyway. Most benzoin sold for incense use, rather than display, is sold at this grade or the one below it.

Blocks: pressed and reconstituted resin

Block benzoin is made by gently warming lower grades of resin, siftings, dust and small fragments, until they soften enough to fuse into a solid cake, which is then cooled and cut or broken into pieces. This turns material that would otherwise be sold cheaply as dust into a more presentable, easier-to-handle product.

Block benzoin is not inherently inferior; the resin itself may be identical in origin to what goes into siftings. But because the pressing step hides the original tears, it is also the grade most vulnerable to adulteration with cheaper diluents such as pine rosin, storax or other resins, since blending is invisible once the block sets. Dust and powder grades

Dust is the finest and cheapest grade: the powder and small crumbs left after tears have been sorted, cut, packed and shipped. It accumulates naturally through handling and is sold as-is rather than reprocessed into blocks.

Dust has a larger surface area than whole tears, which means faster oxidation and a shorter shelf life once exposed to air. It is also the grade most likely to contain bark fragments, sand or other harvest debris, simply because fine material is harder to clean by sieving. How grade relates to scent, not just appearance

Grade describes sorting quality, not a different resin chemistry. For someone new to benzoin, almonds or good siftings from a named origin are the safer starting point, since whole tears are easier to inspect for color, fracture and odor before purchase.
