Why did alcohol-based perfume eclipse solid balms?

Distilled alcohol, refined into fragrance use from roughly the 14th century in preparations like Hungary Water and later eau de cologne, solved two problems fat could not: it evaporated cleanly, leaving no residue, and its volatility carried scent into the air rather than confining it to the skin’s surface.
