A shrub of the eastern Mediterranean

Styrax officinalis is a deciduous shrub or small tree, rarely taller than four or five metres, native to the eastern Mediterranean basin. It grows on rocky, well-drained slopes and open woodland margins in Greece, western and southern Turkey, and across Israel and the Levant, with smaller, more scattered populations further west into Italy and the Balkans. It favours limestone hillsides below roughly 800 metres, often growing among oak, pistachio and carob in maquis-type scrub.

It bears no resemblance, in scale or in economic importance, to the trees that supply benzoin resin today. Those are Southeast Asian species in the same genus, and the contrast between them is part of what makes this shrub worth writing about.

Flowers that recall orange blossom

Styrax officinalis flowers in spring, producing drooping clusters of white, bell-shaped blossoms with a scent often compared to orange blossom or jasmine. The flowers hang from short stalks along the previous year’s growth, giving the shrub a lightly weighted, almost snowdrop-like appearance when in full bloom, which is why English-language nurseries sometimes sell it as “snowdrop bush.”

The leaves are oval, downy underneath, and turn from grey-green to yellow before falling in autumn. The fruit is a small, dry, grey drupe. None of this points toward a plant that yields much resin, and in practice it does not.

From styrax to storax: one word, two resins

The Greek word styrax originally referred to this tree and to the fragrant resin that exuded from wounds in its bark. That single word later split into two separate commercial identities, and the split is the source of most of the confusion still attached to the subject.

One branch of the word became storax, the English name eventually attached to the balsam of Liquidambar orientalis, a different genus altogether, tapped in southwestern Turkey and sold through Mediterranean and Ottoman trade networks. The other branch became benzoin, a term that arrived in Europe via Arabic luban jawi, “frankincense of Java,” and was applied to the unrelated resins of Southeast Asian Styrax species once European traders reached those islands. The result is that Styrax officinalis lent its name to a genus whose most commercially important members it does not resemble, and to a family of resins it barely contributed to. Classical writers knew Styrax officinalis resin well, even if they did not distinguish it cleanly from other fragrant gums of the region. Theophrastus, writing in the fourth century BCE, described a styrax-yielding tree of the Levant. Dioscorides, in the first century CE, listed styrax among fumigation and wound-dressing materials in his De Materia Medica, and Pliny the Elder discussed styrax sourced from Syria, Pisidia and Cilicia, regions overlapping with the shrub’s natural range in modern Turkey and the Levant.

This ancient styrax was burned as incense and used in medicinal preparations of the period, though nothing here should be read as guidance for present-day therapeutic use; the interest is historical. What is actually known about the chemistry

Modern analytical work has focused overwhelmingly on the commercially significant relatives, Styrax benzoin and Styrax tonkinensis, and on Liquidambar orientalis storax. Styrax officinalis resin has not received the same scrutiny, so specific compound percentages for it are not well established in the literature.

What can be said with more confidence is structural: resins across the Styracaceae and related storax-producing plants are typically dominated by cinnamic acid and its esters, alongside benzoic acid derivatives and, in some species, coniferyl benzoate. Styrax officinalis almost certainly shares this general chemical character, since it belongs to the same resin-producing family, but treating any particular figure as established for this species specifically would be premature.

The pattern is consistent: the plant that named the category is the least significant producer within it. Trade shifted east centuries ago, toward species that yield resin in far larger and more reliable quantities.

Conservation and the shrub’s status today

Styrax officinalis is uncommon rather than abundant across most of its range, and in Israel it is legally protected; removing flowers or branches from wild plants is prohibited. It is grown as an ornamental in Mediterranean gardens for its scented spring flowers, and it appears in native-plant restoration schemes in parts of the Levant and Greece, but it has no meaningful role in the resin trade and has not had one for a very long time.

Why the name still matters

Styrax officinalis is a minor plant with an outsized linguistic legacy.
